King Arthur accepted the sword from the Lady of the Lake on condition that when his life neared its end he should return it to her. At the battle of Camlan, in 537 CE, Arthur was mortally wounded. He entrusted Sir Bedivere to return Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake.
